How to Get Rid of an Old Piano in Metro Detroit
Selling it, giving it away, or having it hauled out.

Why Pianos Are Hard to Get Rid Of
Lots of homes in Metro Detroit still have an old upright that nobody plays. It's heavy, it's awkward, and the cast iron plate inside alone can weigh well over 100 pounds. Most curbside pickup and thrift stores won't take one. Here are your real options.
Option 1: Sell It or Give It Away
If it still holds a tune, list it on Facebook Marketplace or ask a local piano tuner if they know someone looking. Be honest about its condition and say up front that the buyer handles the move. Be ready for it to sit a while, because there are a lot of free pianos out there and not many takers.
Option 2: Donate It
Some churches, schools and community theaters take pianos that are in good shape. Call first, since most only want ones that have been tuned and kept up, and many can't arrange the pickup.
Option 3: Take It Apart Yourself
With hand tools, a free afternoon and a couple of strong helpers, you can take a piano apart and haul it in pieces. Be careful. The strings are under a lot of tension, the iron plate is very heavy, and you'll still need a truck and a place that will take it. Wear gloves and eye protection.
Option 4: Have Us Haul It Away
We bring the dolly, straps and blankets, carry it out without wrecking your floors or door frames, and haul it away. Garage, living room or back porch, text us a photo and the way out and we'll tell you how we'd do it.

Questions
Will the city pick up an old piano?
Usually not. A piano is far heavier than what curbside crews lift by hand, and you'd still have to get it to the curb. Check with your city before you count on it.
Will a thrift store take my piano?
Most won't, because pianos are hard to move and hard to sell. Call ahead before you load it up.
How heavy is an upright piano?
Most uprights weigh between 300 and 800 pounds. Spinets are on the lighter end, and old full size uprights are on the heavy end.
Do you take organs too?
Yes. Old home organs and electric pianos go the same way. See our piano removal page.
