Five ways to get rid of it, from free to done for you.

Your Options
Mattresses are heavy, floppy and awkward, and you can't just squeeze one into the trash cart. Here are the realistic ways to get rid of one around Metro Detroit, roughly from cheapest to easiest.
1. Put It Out With Your Trash
Many cities take a mattress at the curb as a bulk item on your regular trash day. In Sterling Heights it counts toward the five bulk items allowed each week. In Warren, set it neatly next to your carts, and if there are bed bugs it must be wrapped and sealed in plastic.
Check our bulk trash pickup guide for more on the city rules.
2. Have the Store Take It
If you're buying a new mattress, ask the store if they'll take the old one when they deliver. Many do, sometimes for a small fee. Ask before delivery day so the crew knows.
3. Donate It
Only if it's clean, with no stains, tears or sagging. A lot of charities can't accept used mattresses for health reasons, so call ahead before you load it up.
4. Take It to a Recycling Drop Off
Mattresses are mostly steel springs, foam and wood, and a lot of that can be recycled. Some recycling facilities and transfer stations take them, usually for a fee per mattress. Call first to check hours and what they accept.
5. Have Us Haul It Away
One mattress is a normal job for us. We carry it out from any floor, take the box spring and frame too, and you don't need to be home if you leave it on the porch or in the garage.

- Box springs, frames, headboards and bunk beds

Questions
Can I put a mattress in the trash cart?
No, it won't fit, and haulers won't dig it out of a cart. Set it next to your carts as a bulk item if your city allows it.
What if the mattress has bed bugs?
Wrap and seal it in plastic before it leaves the bedroom. Warren requires this for curbside pickup, and it keeps bugs from spreading through the house on the way out.
Will you take just one mattress?
Yes. A single mattress is a normal job, and it costs a lot less than a full load. See our mattress removal page.
