Your Options
Old appliances are heavy, and fridges and freezers have refrigerant that has to be handled the right way. Here's how to get rid of them around Metro Detroit.
1. DTE Will Pay You for a Working Fridge or Freezer
If you're a DTE residential electric customer, DTE's appliance recycling program picks up a working refrigerator or freezer for free and gives you a gift card, currently $50 for a full size unit. It has to be working, empty, clean and defrosted. Smaller fridges, room air conditioners and dehumidifiers can earn a smaller amount.
Schedule on DTE's website or call (866) 796-0512, and check their site for the current details.
2. Set It Out for Bulk Pickup
Many cities take appliances at the curb on trash day. In Warren, refrigerators and freezers must be empty with the doors removed, and air conditioners and dehumidifiers need the Freon removed by a licensed company, with a sticker on the unit to prove it. Rules vary, so check with your city or hauler first, or see our bulk trash pickup guide.
Always Take the Doors Off
An old fridge or freezer sitting outside with the doors on is dangerous for kids. Take the doors off before it leaves the house, even if it's only out for one night.
3. The Store or a Scrap Yard
Buying a new one? Most appliance stores will haul the old one away when they deliver, sometimes for a fee. Ask before delivery day.
Washers, dryers, stoves and water heaters are mostly metal, so some scrap yards will take them. Fridges, freezers and AC units usually need the refrigerant removed by a certified technician first, so call ahead.
4. Have Us Haul It Away
We carry it out of the basement, kitchen or garage, handle the stairs and tight doorways, and haul it away. Working appliances get donated when we can, and metal gets recycled. One appliance or a whole house of them.

Questions
Will DTE take a broken fridge?
No. DTE's program is for working units only. For a broken one, use curbside pickup if your city allows it, a scrap yard that handles refrigerant, or have us haul it.
Why do fridges need special handling?
They contain refrigerant that has to be recovered by a certified technician instead of being let out into the air.
Can you get an appliance out of the basement?
Yes. Stairs are a normal part of the job for us.
What appliances do you take?
Refrigerators, freezers, washers, dryers, stoves, dishwashers, microwaves, water heaters, air conditioners and dehumidifiers.
