How to Get Rid of an Old Hot Tub in Metro Detroit
Selling it, tearing it down yourself, or having it hauled away.

Why Hot Tubs Are Hard to Get Rid Of
A hot tub is big, heavy and awkward. Most weigh several hundred pounds even when empty, they rarely fit through a backyard gate without a fight, and curbside trash pickup won't take a whole one. Here are your real options.
First, Make It Safe
- Turn off the power at the breaker, and have an electrician disconnect the wiring if the tub is hardwired.
- Drain it completely using the drain valve or a submersible pump.
- Many cities ask you not to drain treated water into the storm sewer, so check with yours before you start.
Option 1: Sell It or Give It Away
If it still works, someone may take it off your hands. List it on Facebook Marketplace and be clear that the buyer handles the move. Working tubs with a good cover go fastest.
Option 2: Tear It Down Yourself
With a reciprocating saw, a free weekend and a couple of helpers, you can cut a hot tub into pieces. Expect foam insulation, fiberglass dust and a big pile of debris, and you'll still need a truck and a dump that will take it. Wear gloves, eye protection and a dust mask.
Option 3: Have Us Haul It Away
Once the power is off and it's drained, we take it from there. We cut it apart if we need to, carry it out through the gate, haul everything away and clean up the spot. The steps, the cover and the old cabinet go too.

Questions
Will the city pick up an old hot tub?
Not a whole one. Curbside bulk pickup is meant for items you can carry to the curb, so plan on selling it, tearing it down, or having it hauled.
Do I need to drain it first?
Yes, and the power has to be off. A full or wired in tub can't be moved safely.
Can you get it out of a fenced backyard?
Usually, yes. If it won't fit through the gate in one piece, we cut it apart on site.
Do you take above ground pools too?
Yes. See our above ground pool removal page.
